The Supreme Court and Prop 8 - why you should care!!!!

If you haven't tuned into the news in awhile, or of you forgot, or if you have been out of the loop - Prop 8 is a law that was put into effect in California overturning a previous court decision that legalized gay marriage in the state. Proponents and opponents of the issue have pushed this battle all the way to the Supreme Court.

First let me say timing is everything - the highest court could not have picked a better time to take on this case. Why? Because various recent polls show that the majority of Americans now accept same sex marriage. The Supreme Court can uphold what appears to be public opinion. Or they can continue to distort the constitution to satisfy a dwindling number of anti gay supporters.

That being said everyone should care about this. The US has a long standing history of discrimination and tolerated hatred against anything that doesn't fit into the 'norm.' And no I don't know what normal is and neither do most of you lol. (Especially if you are reading this blog).

Moving on - lets not speculate on what the outcome of this will be. At least not yet. Rather just think about how you would feel if there was a law in place that prevented you from seeking basic happiness. And preventing same sex marriage does exactly that. It prevents LGBTs from obtaining something that could make them. Clearly marriage isn't for everyone. BUT if Brittany Spears can marry for 2 days and Kim Kardashian for 72, two men or two women should be able to do the same thing.

Happy Birthday Mr. President!!!!

President Obama turns 51 today. Although the president took a break from politics and the campaign trail today, he will surely be back campaigning and leading our country in a few hours!!!!! Young and black! I LOVE IT! http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/04/obama-birthday_n_1741215.html

Long time coming . . .

Hi Political Peeps,

I know it has been a really long time since I have updated. It has been one hell of a year!!! When I logged on I noticed that my last post was on May 10th of this year. On May 11th my dad passed away. And it has been a struggle for me truly. But I am coping and ready to dedicate more of my time to my beloved blog. And the politicians that make me tingle and the ones that piss me off.

Hope all is well. :)

Romney apologizes for High School behavior

A quick followup to my post yesterday about Obama endorsing gay marriage -

Although Romney has pointed out that he would much rather discuss the economy, gas prices and anything else except equal rights for gay and lesbian, he just cant escape the topic. The Washington Post recently bought to light Romney's troubling behavior during high school that including many practical jokes, that may have gone too far. One incident in particular being discussed is an incident where he cut the hair of a gay classmate (joke or bully?).

I am not sure how much of a problem this will present for Romney, I think this maybe swept under the rug by the time November comes around. But it being on the heels of Obama endorsing gay marriage, could leave a little sting. My personal opinion - cutting someone's hair is far from a practical joke. BUT it was about thirty years ago, its possible that Romney is (and I expect he is) a really different person. HOWEVER this is also the same man that strapped his dog to the top of his car during an extended family road trip. AND he is more of a business man than a politician which will be a problem for Romney.

To stand a chance against Obama in the polls Romney needs to figure out a way to show that he not only has a personality but he is capable of compassion

Obama for Gay Marriage

The huffingtonpost.com posted a clip of President Obama on ABC speaking out in support of gay marriage.

It is not a secret that in the past the president has said that he has been conflicted about if he agrees with 'gay marriage.' In the past he has said that he does support civil unions. However on last night's broadcast, he has said that he indeed DOES feel that marriage is necessary for gay and lesbian couples.

There have been many polls and surveys showing that the majority of the public is now in support of gay marriage. I think many people will say that Obama is trying to align himself with that majority. However I think Obama has always been in support of gay marriage. I think he was just waiting for the right time to speak out on it. I didn't expect his opinion to come out so early, I expected him to voice his support of same sex marriage during his second term in office (you already know).

Many gay marriage advocates were upset with Obama for not voicing his support in the past, I am interested to see what they will have to say. In addition I am SURE that conservative Republicans will jump all over this. I'm sure Ann Coulter is typing up her press release right now, to say something asinine that will get her a good five minutes on the five o'clock news.
